GP Net Earnings

All GP practices are required to declare the mean earnings (i.e. average pay) for GPs working to deliver NHS services to patients at each practice.

It should be noted that the prescribed method for calculating earnings is potentially misleading because it takes no account of how much time doctors spend working in the practice and should not be used for any judgement about GP earnings, nor to make any comparison with other practices.

For Example

  • In a practice with 4 full time GP's with a total net earning of £480,000, the prescribed method would calculate an average earnings firgure of £480,000 divided by 4 = £120,000 per annum.
  • If the same practice employed 2 full time and 4 part time GPs, the average earnings figures calculation would be £480,000 divided by 6 = £80,000 per annum

The average pay for GPs working in The Lavant Road Surgery in the last financial year was £126,185 before tax and National Insurance. This is for 2 full time GPs and part time GPs who worked in the practice for six months or more.

NHS England require that the net earnings of doctors engaged in the practice is publicised by 31 March 2024 at the latest.
